On 19 June 2026, a bronze statue of Maharishi Sushruta was unveiled at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. The book produced to mark that day, Maharishi Sushruta Compendium – Father of Surgery, is published by Author’s Ink Publications and is now on the shelves of bookstores across India.
We photographed it in stores in Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai as it arrived.
The book
The compendium is edited by Prof. Chandra VN Cheruvu, a UK-based surgeon who holds four FRCS qualifications from the Royal Colleges of Surgeons in England, Edinburgh and Glasgow, and is presented by the Cheruvu Family Foundation.
It is a commemorative, multi-author volume that brings together 36 contributors from Ayurveda and modern medicine, among them Prof. Dattatreyudu Nori and Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty. Their essays look at Sushruta’s life, teachings and methods, and at how his ideas connect with today’s surgical and medical specialities — from plastic surgery, neurosurgery and ophthalmology to medical ethics and Ayurveda.

Who was Maharishi Sushruta?
Sushruta was an ancient Indian physician traditionally regarded as the father of surgery. The Sushruta Samhita, the text attributed to him, is among the earliest known works devoted to surgery, and is credited with describing hundreds of surgical procedures and more than a hundred surgical instruments.
The Edinburgh statue is a 90-kilogram bronze made in Tamil Nadu and gifted by the Cheruvu Family Foundation. It was unveiled as part of the heritage collection of one of the world’s oldest surgical colleges, and the compendium was produced to accompany it.

Why a book like this belongs on a bookshop shelf
