ISBN registration in India

How to get an ISBN for your book in India.

An ISBN is the number that lets a bookshop, a library or Amazon identify your book. The good news most people don't know: in India it is free. Here is exactly how it works — and how we take the whole thing off your hands.

The basics

What an ISBN is, and whether you need one.

What it isA 13-digit number that uniquely identifies your title. Retailers, distributors and libraries use it to catalogue and sell the book.
Whether you need oneTo sell through Amazon, Flipkart or any bookstore — yes. A private print for family only can skip it, but anything sold needs one.
One per formatPaperback, hardback and ebook each need their own ISBN. They are separate editions in the system.
The free government route

How to get an ISBN yourself in India.

ISBNs in India are issued free of charge by the Raja Rammohun Roy National Agency (RRRNA), under the Ministry of Education. Publishers and self-publishing authors based in India can apply on the portal isbn.gov.in. Here is the process.

STEP 01

Register on isbn.gov.in

Create an account on the government ISBN portal as an author or publisher.

STEP 02

Submit your details

Enter the title, author, format and other publication details for each edition.

STEP 03

Wait for allocation

The agency reviews and issues the number. This is the step that can take time.

STEP 04

Add it to your book

Print the ISBN and its barcode on the cover and copyright page before publishing.

ISBN registration on isbn.gov.in: the seven stages

RRRNA's guide for self-publishing authors lists seven stages.

  1. Pre-registration. Choose Author, then Self published by Author. Login details are emailed.
  2. Login. Set a new password.
  3. Post-registration. Add your address and upload your PAN card and address proof (PDF or JPG, under 500 KB). Approval usually takes 2 to 3 working days.
  4. ISBN request. Enter the author name, title and imprint. Category allotment usually takes 1 to 2 working days.
  5. Add book details. Language, product form and publication date.
  6. ISBN issuance. Around 2 to 3 working days after you submit the title details.
  7. Final title verso. Upload the final title verso (copyright) page.

RRRNA's FAQ says the process normally takes 7 to 9 working days from registration, depending on the applications it has received. These are RRRNA's figures, not ours. Check the guide on the portal before you apply, because the agency can change them.

isbn.gov.in and RRRNA: official links

isbn.gov.in is the official portal of the Raja Rammohun Roy National Agency for ISBN (RRRNA), Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education. We are a publisher, not the agency. Every link below goes to RRRNA's portal, not to us.

  • isbn.gov.in: choose Applicant Registration if you are applying for the first time.
  • Applicant Login, for returning applicants. Your application status shows under My Application.
  • Search ISBN, to look up a book or a publisher. Only ISBNs issued from April 2016 onwards are on the portal.
  • Contact Us, for RRRNA's own email addresses and phone numbers.

The catch

It is free, but it is government paperwork — the account, the per-title submissions, the wait, and getting the barcode right on the cover. First-time authors routinely stall here, or discover after printing that the format or details were wrong. That is the part a publisher removes.

The easy route

Or we just do it for you.

Author's Ink allocates the ISBN as part of every publishing package — we handle the registration, generate the barcode and assign it to your title before printing. No separate application, no separate cost.

Included in every packageFrom Pocket Book at ₹15,999 to Tiger at ₹1,49,999 — ISBN allocation is part of the price, not an add-on.
Barcode & placement handledThe barcode is generated and placed correctly on the cover, so nothing gets rejected at print.
Right number, right formatWe register the correct ISBN for each format you are publishing, so print and ebook are never mixed up.

Do I need an ISBN to publish a book?+

To sell it through Amazon, Flipkart or bookstores, yes — it is how the title is identified in their systems. A private print for family only can go without, but anything meant to be sold needs one.

Can one ISBN cover print and ebook?+

No. Each format — paperback, hardback, ebook — needs its own ISBN, because each is a separate edition. Your project manager arranges the ones your formats need.

How long does ISBN allocation take?+

RRRNA's FAQ says the government route normally takes 7 to 9 working days from registration, depending on the applications it has received. When we handle it as part of your package, it runs alongside design and formatting so it does not hold up your schedule — ask your project manager for the current timeline.
